ABOUT
Cecilia Levy creates sculptural objects in paper, using old book pages, wheat starch paste and papier maché technique.
Her work is exhibited internationally and is included in private and permanent collections, including the Swedish National museum.
In 2017, her public art commission In Fusion – Contemplation Pieces was installed in the main entrance of Stockholms New Karolinska University Hospital, NKS, twenty plinths holding over 25 unique paper sculptures.
She lives in Sigtuna, works in her studio at Ateljéföreningen Hospitalet in Uppsala and is a member of Konsthantverkarna in Stockholm, where her work is sold.
Formerly a graphic designer and bookbinder, I now work fulltime as an independant artist. My work includes sculptures, objects and installations, using paper from old books.
Visible traces from the passage of time, marks from previous owners and readers, paper quality and color, typography, holes after the binding, wrinkles and dog ears, olden expressions and spelling, and (sometimes) odd content. This is what determines the choice of my work material and this is what I value. I choose each piece of paper with care and incorporate the above qualities into my objects. All contribute to the expression I aim for in my work.
I tear, cut or shred the pages and merge them together again using paste, molds and papier maché technique. The book is recreated in a way, but takes on a new form. Work process is slow, quiet and repetitive. The two-dimensional becomes three-dimensional.
